Start a conversation.
We have organized a number of resources - read alouds, short novels, interviews, articles, and videos for students and their parents to explore. Some of these further our understanding of school as it is experienced by students around the world. Others dramatically show us the compelling stories of children and adults whose quest for an education demands great sacrifice and courage.
In the first weeks of school, parents will be asked to write a letter telling their child why he or she should attend school. Grandparents are also welcome to participate. These letters and other grade-level appropriate materials will be used by the teacher to lead class discussions that help students think deeply about the question.

Organize.
Thinking maps will be used by the students complete the first step of the writing process, the pre-write. The Blakely Staff has recently been trained in the use of these maps and we look forward to introducing them to our children. These maps are visual tools that are linked to specific cognitive processes. They will help them structure their note taking and organize their thinking.

Write.
Every child will have the opportunity to compose a response. Kindergartners will draw and fourth graders will construct multi-paragraph essays. The whole range. The whole school.

We will celebrate completion of our first Blakely All-School Write by posting student work on this website. We will also create and post linear display boards (K-4) to hang in the halls of our school prior to our Oct. conferences.
